Dead Horse Point
An immense desert landscape of canyons, high desert woodland, and miles of trails invite visitors to explore Dead Horse Point State Park.
Sunrises and sunsets are especially memorable, with canyon walls bathed in golden light, creating a stunning scene reminiscent of vivid watercolor paintings.
I was planning on getting up and shooting Mesa Arch, but the weather was not looking like it was going to be good for a sunrise. Mesa arch is extremely popular with photographers and very crowded. I was dreading having to line up closely with 20 or 30 other photographers during a pandemic with little to no hope of a sunrise... so I decided to attempt something a little different. I left the hotel early (4:00 AM) and drove to a place called Dead Horse Point in the Canyonlands. I was there by 5:00 AM with an hour to spare until sunrise and I was waiting out a storm in my Jeep Rubicon. Good thing I had the top on because the rain was coming down pretty hard, and I fully expected to come out of the day with nothing to show. I finally decided to give it a try and walked out into the rain with my camera and tripod in hand. I was surprised to see a photographer already setting up. He was beyond the park barrier standing out on a ledge overhanging a cliff. The sun didn't really show up at first and rain decided it would make things even more difficult as it continued to pour. Luckily, after about 10 minutes, a ray of sunshine peaked through a sliver of sky and soon the horizon lit up in orange and red. It was hard to get any good shots at first because the rain was still coming down and the droplets were beading on my lens. For about a minute, however, it stopped, and I was able to capture this photograph.
