T. A. Moulton Barn Tetons

Mormon Row, formerly known as the town of Grovont, was settled in the late 1890s by Mormons from the Salt Lake region. Due to the Homestead Act of 1862, which granted land ownership to any person willing to build a house and cultivate the area for five years, this community was able to establish a presence in the area east of Blacktail Butte. Settlers secured 27 homesteads that they built close together to share labor and community. The John Moulton Barn is part of John and Bartha Moulton’s homestead. Today, this barn and their more modern-style, pink stucco home still stand on their homestead, which was inhabited seasonally until the late 1980s. Many travel from around the world to photograph this historic structure. This photo was taken early in the morning in 2020.

Oxbow Bendn Wide

Oxbow Bend is an overlook along highway 89/191 between Jackson Lake Junction and Moran Junction. An oxbow is a crescent-shaped section of river lying alongside a flowing, winding river. The oxbow is created over time as erosion and deposits of soil change the river's course. Oxbow Bend is home to a variety of birds and animals, including pelicans, Great Blue Herons, muskrats, otters, moose, and bear. On calm days, Mount Moran can be seen reflected on the surface of the water. Oxbow Bend is a popular area to view sunrise or sunset, and is visited by photographers hoping to capture the river and Teton Range.

Schwabacher Landing

Schwabacher’s Landing is a spot on the Snake River, almost exactly east of Grand Teton, where the terrain flattens out and allows easy access to the river. There is a dirt road coming off the main highway and down to various trailheads. This is a launch site on the River for anglers and river rafters and is one of America’s most spectacular viewpoints.

Thomas Murphy Barn, Tetons

Due to the Homestead Act of 1862, which granted land ownership to any person willing to build a house and cultivate the area for five years, this community was able to establish a presence in the area east of Blacktail Butte. Settlers secured 27 homesteads that they built close together to share labor and community. This barn was originally built by Thomas Murphy and was later purchased by Joe Heninger. Heninger held the mail contract for the Jackson to Moran route. In the winter he offered his homestead as a resting place to feed and warm drivers and their horses. This photo was taken early in the morning in 2020.

Hidden Creek at Guanella Pass

The Guanella Pass Scenic Byway is a great introduction to Colorado's Rocky Mountains. Climbing to timberline, the byway takes in views of 14,060-foot Mount Bierstadt and the alpine tundra before descending into cool groves of aspen and pine, as well as the historic town of Georgetown. It was one of those wet and rainy weekends that are so rare in Colorado. I decided to use the time to get some good creek shots and took the road from Bailey Colorado to Guanella pass. I stopped near the tree line at a creek and started to hike. I don’t remember how far I walked but I found this location and captured this image. I went back to the location the next year on a dry day and the rocks were dry and did not have the same striking color. The following year, trees had fallen over the rocks and the location wouldn’t ever be the same. 20 years later, I tried to find it but I have not been able to. This picture has a great deal of meaning for me. Often I wait for everything to be perfect and miss on opportunities to see things in the moment. This was a once in a lifetime picture and never would have been taken had I not ventured out into the rain.
